A weekly round-up of all the latest global health research from MSF projects and beyond

5 August 2022

This week, in IJTLD, MSF describes the implementation of the Family Directly Observed Therapy (F-DOT) model which provides in-home treatment for children with drug-resistant tuberculosis in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The report demonstrates the acceptability of F-DOT among families and patients and is now the standard of care in MSF clinics.

In PLOS One, Epicentre reports improved treatment outcomes in people living with HIV (PLHIV) receiving a holistic model of care in Kampala, Uganda, with particular focus on scaling up holistic approaches for younger PLHIV. In a second article in the same journal, MSF explores the use of viraemic-time (the proportion of follow-up time with unsuppressed viral load above the limit of detection) as a predictor for mortality among PLHIV on second-line antiretroviral treatment in Myanmar.

The Lancet discusses the processes – and the lack of transparency around such processes – that led to the WHO’s declaration of monkeypox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). And BMJ Global Health draws from climate change and tobacco control policies to highlight three important themes that are also relevant to antimicrobial resistance mitigation.

Finally, PLOS Global Public Health assesses the performance of the routine health information system (RHIS) during the tenth outbreak of Ebola virus disease between 2018 and 2022 in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo. The authors recommend better allocation of human resources and simplifying data flow to build a more efficient RHIS for future public health crises.

View and share Conflict and Health’s latest call for papers on how research can support the localisation of humanitarian research and community-based disease surveillance among crisis-affected populations.

Best Regards,

Emma Levrau, Lydia Lampiri, Sreeshna Jagadeesan and Holly Baker with MSF-authored article assistance from Patricia Kahn and Amelia Zhao
