A weekly round-up of all the latest global health research from MSF projects and beyond

7 January 2022

Happy New Year and welcome to the first MSF Global Health Review of 2022!

This week, in Conflict and Health, MSF assessed the utility, feasibility, and sustainability of current and emerging vector control tools for malaria in emergency context settings through the use of a two-round Delphi survey involving 80 experts in the field. And Malaria Journal explores the prevalence of neglected malaria parasites in hard-to-reach areas of Odisha, India within the context of an ongoing special malaria elimination drive in the region.

In The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, MSF welcomes the addition of insulin analogues and SGLT2 inhibitors to the 22nd WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, which has the potential to reduce prices and address challenges with diabetes treatment in low-resource settings. And PLOS Global Public Health investigates the self-care knowledge, attitudes, and associated factors among outpatients with diabetes mellitus in Southeast Ethiopia.

In Acta Tropica, DNDi evaluates the on-site experience of a patient-centred roadmap for the diagnosis and treatment of Chagas disease in high-risk endemic areas of Colombia. In the same journal, DNDi further explores a multidisciplinary, collaborative, inter-agency and comprehensive approach for the control of Chagas disease in Guatemala which has the potential to increase community participation in vector control and patient care.

MSF publishes a study in PLOS One exploring the factors influencing loss to follow-up and death of paediatric patients in two hospital wards in North-West Nigeria. Meanwhile, a study in BMJ Global Health proposes oxygen systems strengthening as an intervention to reduce hospital-based childhood deaths due to pneumonia in low-resource settings.

Finally, Epicentre publishes a study in Comprehensive Psychiatry on mental health disorders in a mental health services-seeking population of children, adolescents, and young adults in the context of ongoing violence and displacement in northern Cameroon.

Research and innovation abstracts for MSF Scientific Days 2022 are welcome, and more information on how to submit can be found on the MSF Scientific Days website.

Best Regards,
